Jon D, a few questions (about decals)

Posted by Paul on March 24, 2003 at 16:26:26:

Heya Jon,

Had a few questions about your mods I have seen on your site.

When you removed the decals from the side of the bike (the ones that say LS Suzuki) did they leave a dent like the Savage decals did?

Also, how do you like that National Flyscreen you have? I'm not a big fan of large windshields, but that one had such a sleek look, I thougt about trying one. Does it get decent air redirection on the Highway?

Thanks!

Hey Paul-

First question about decals. On a '95, the side covers say "Savage". The gas tank has smaller "Suzuki" logo decals. That's it. So when I took them off the side covers from under the clearcoat, there was an indentation reading "Savage". But you have to get somewhat close to see it. Same deal on the gas tank. Some day if I get ambitious enough and have money to throw around, I may remove all body parts and take them to be professionally painted.

As for the National Cycle Flyscreen: I've ridden my bike with a full-size windshield and no windshield. I didn't like riding without any windshield over 60 mph. After 30 minutes of clenching the bars, I found that uncomfortable. On the other hand, I'm not big on the looks of a windshield. I think it disrupts the lines of a bike's appearance. Part of what attracted me to the Savage was its looks. Then I saw the Flyscreen. I actually liked the custom look it gives. I went to CruiserCustomizing.com to read reviews on it. Reviews ranged from "it's useless for wind protection and only for looks" to "it really takes the wind off your chest". Found one for $22 on eBay and figured I'd give it a try. It's worth the $100+ retail in my opinion. It takes just enough wind off your chest while keeping you "in the wind." I wear a full-face helmet, so wind in the face is not really an issue for me. I can't comment on the shield for open-face helmet riders. All I can say is that it is really comfortable behind this thing at highway speeds. Mind you, it's not going to give you the protection of a large screen, but in my opinion it does just enough to make it fun and comfortable. Plus, you don't see too many bike with these screens, so it's a nice custom touch.

Keep in touch...and check out my website for more info...

i've a 98 savage and the side cover i pulled my decal off of had no indendation (simple decal). mind you, it did leave a slight discoloration behind (slight fading of color where decal did not cover). i had to replace my left-side cover and it came with no decal (or indentation).

can't speak to jon's style of windshield (does look sharp) but the standard suzuki screen for the savage provides good wind redirection (cept for some head buffet). i miss riding 'naked' every now again (cept for the expressway commute back and forth to work). just my 2 cents worth.

hey jon - totally off-topic but what's the status of the muffler deal? last we heard you'd ended up with an open megaphone - are you going to rig something with that, stick with stock or buy something else?

Hey TomCat-

I thought of another thing to mention about the Flyscreen. I don't feel the helmet buffeting I would get from my bigger windshield at times. I rode today on the expressway for 30 minutes. It was comfy and no buffeting. Just another observation about the Flyscreen.

As for the muffler, I've gone chicken at the moment. The more I hear about the Jardine, the more I want to buy one! Every time someone tells the story of how they put one on, I want to buy one. But the $140 is keeping me from buying one.
The HD muffler is going to need some work done to it. I'm not running it straight. I know winter is far from now, but perhaps I'll tackle it then.

But you never know, I might get the bug to change it during a rainy spell this season. I expect carb work with this muffler because it's not tuned for the Savage. My carb's fine now. So I'll let sleeping dogs lie, you know?

I just want to ride right now and keep my eyes on my two most recent concerns:
1. Keeping my new decals from peeling and looking ratty
2. My intermittent electrical problems

Thanks for askin',

I just took the plunge.

I purchased a Fly Screen and a Jardine slip on (figure I'd save some on shipping with the bundle order)

Should have them both next week!

$246.89 US (includes shipping)

I envy you for your Ebay find Jon, I have been non stop searching since I read your thread.. no luck and I need a screen as its time to start motoring to and from DC =)
