Bike Lifts

Posted by Steve on March 24, 2003 at 21:02:16:

I purchased a bike lift last year and never had a reason to use it until now (It was on sale and kept whispering at me as I walked by, how could I resist). It barely fits under the frame but there doesnt seem to be anything there to be able to lift. (the frame doesnt seem big enough underneath to sit on the lift).

Does anyone else have this problem and how can I rig something to help. Any advice is always appreciated.

I bought one from Sears which went right under. Had no problems with it. ($106.99 US)

There was also a discussion about a homemade lift a few weeks back.

Yes, I also had the same problem with my bike lift from Sam's Club. I found a plastic bread holder, (flat) like the ones at the grocery store. I placed this over the lift and then lifted the cycle. The plastic crushed, to form-fit the underside of the cycle protrusions.

I have the same "balls-out-bike-jack" (as me and my buddies call it) that David K. got from Sam's. You could put a Boss Hoss on it! I just used it for the first time last weekend.

I of course encountered the same problem. I screwed on this square metal adapter that came with it. That got me a bit closer to fitting. Then I put a 1 X 6 board across that. I jacked it up from the rear half of the engine/frame area. It worked okay, pretty stable.

But I did decide I needed to find a new board or something. David's bread thing might work (how the hell did you ever come up with that!? Bread, bikes, what's the connection!? . I'm also thinking of just getting a custom size board and mounting it to the jack so I won't have to mess around when I want to lift it.

So with the wood and bread holders (amazing what can catch your eye and make you think) can you still access the oil drain plug? That was the reason I got the lift (its a BlackJack from Costco in Canada, guess its like Sams. I dont think I would have enough clearance for even a 1" piece of wood under it without having to lift the bike onto it, which kinda defeats the purpose of having a lift. I am thinking now thinking of a piece of sheetmetal (should scrunch like the bread holder). Then I could maybe cut an opening to get to the oil plug and maybe make a little funnel at the same time. Any thoughts?

I have some thoughts on the oil change and using a lift.

When I had my bike on the lift 2 days ago, I thought, well this wouldn't be good for oil changes. I mean, you can't put the drain pan under the bike. It just seemed stupid.

Then I realized that I don't *need* the lift for oil changes! The bike tilts that way and is easy to change the oil on the side stand. The drain pan fits perfectly under the bike.

So I figured the lift would be good for other things than oil changes.
