has anyone ever slimmed up the wiring harness?

Posted by davE on March 21, 2003 at 07:20:47:

got a chopper in the works and am wanting to use the bare necessities. Hi/lo beam. Brake light, and starting system. I got the wiring harness of and have a manual, but am a little confused on the ignition circuit. It's got crap I've never heard of before... signal generator? Pick up coil? What the hell is that crap? Do I need it to start the bike?

Where have you been? Did you expect to find "breaker points"?

Keep the rubber side down

Don't feel bad davE. Most people would not be able to describe each part of a motorcycle starting system and correctly tell you the ins and outs of each. All that being said, I am proud of you for looking for ways to cutomize the bike and look forward to seeing what you do to it. Keep us informed. We all learn from doing. Except for the experts I guess that were born with all the information included in their DNA.

First I would like to say that I am not one of those born experts. My knowledge comes with studying and hands on experience.

> has replaced the breaker points that used to be the cause of 'coil collapse' and spark induction.
The capacitor discharge ignition has been around for 20 years or so on motorcycles. Even the 1987 Savage has this system of ignition, (signal generator & pick up coil) it is part of the running system. So you not only need it to start, but also to run the engine.

I am always willing to answer a question in a nice and helpful manor if the question is also presented in a nice and respectable manor.

When a person asks a question such as, ">" ">" I tend to respond in a similar sarcastic manor, such as; oh yea you never heard of this CRAP, how about that where've you been?

Be sure to keep the wiring and parts of the cranking delay system. The battery and starter are designed to start a big single w/o compresion relief to get it spinning. Looks like horn, marker and turn signals are about all you can remove. Max
