While checking out my bike and doing some spring maintenance recently, I noticed oil when I went to change my spark plug. The oil isn't terrible, but it appears to be coming from the bolt on the head next to the spark plug. Is this the infamous leak that everyone has talked about? And of so, should I just try to retorque and gasket seal it? Please advise.
By the way, got the new drag bar, mirros, and highway pegs on, what a difference. So far I love it. Next projects: seat rise (thanks to Jon D.), passenger and driver pegs, and install Raask pipe. Will do a website and post before/after pictures soon.

the most prevalent oil leak seems to be from the opposite side of the cylinder (see the open vent/hole front right topside of jug). there's a plug (under the cylinder head cover, top of venting hole) right next to the valves that sometimes exhibits a leak problem. the leak you're describing sounds more like a possible seal problem with the cover. i'd try retorquing all the bolts - if that doesn't work then you'll prolly want to pull the cylinder head cover and re-seal. good luck!

Hi Volley, Yours isn't the infamous oil leak - Tom Cat has described that. My Savage had an oil leak from the nuts that hold the head on but the opposite side of the head to yours. The oil would blow back onto the tool box. These are the symtoms of the infamous leak, but replacing the head seal cap (rubber bung!!) didn't cure it. When I checked on the Suzuki parts list, the washers under these nuts are called gaskets. I bought 4 new ones, coated them with instant gasket, replaced the existing ones and cured my oil leak. I'm sure you will cure your oil leak just as simply and cheaply.

Oil leaks you know I hate them. I just noticed this weekend my tool box cover was splattered with oil. Thanks to this site I am working up the nerve to re-seal by pulling off the cylinder cover. Called the local motorcycle shop and they want $200.00 to do the work including the parts. Seems a bit high. Good luck on your leak. Let us know what happends. Sounds like Tom Cat has the right idea. Thanks again to this site and the ones that post. You all have been a great help to us that don't know alot, but are trying to learn.

i've found that the hardest part of the whole operation is getting the cover back on after you've put the sealant on it (getting it over the cam and trying not to lose the sealant). messy and awkward but nothing too bad (and i don't consider myself much of a mechanic). lots of stuff here on this task (definitely recommend the cardboard 'punchout map' for the bolts - comes in very handy).

Thanks all for the input. Fortunately it isn't a bad leak, s0 I will tackle this job as soon as the weather permits (a garage sure would come in handly right now . Will post an update once I've tried these suggestions. Thanks again!
I am having the same problem....Yes many years after this discussion happened. I just got a 2002 and it has an oil leak and trying to decide if i want to re-seal the plug or try tightening the bolts on mine(which is where it looks like it is coming from). Did you find out what the solution was?
